Using Public Health Dashboards
Certain events bring big data into the public eye. The COVID-19 pandemic has generated an extensive amount of data from public institutions that are publishing their own dashboards, including governments, hospitals, and schools. However, when using these resources, it's important to be able to evaluate the accuracy of the data and even more critical to use the data in a responsible manner. Learn how to evaluate the various dashboards that are available to researchers, including the COVID-19 dashboard from John Hopkins University and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) dashboard, in this course with data scientist and professor Jennifer Shin. Learn how to view and interpret dashboard metrics and visualizations and use them effectively in your own data science projects.
Using Public Health Data Sources
Certain events bring big data into the public eye. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an extensive amount of data has been collected and utilized by public institutions–including governments, hospitals, and schools—and used to make key decisions that impact the public. The potential widespread impact of the decisions made based on this data underscores the importance of being able to verify the accuracy of the data, as well as using it in a responsible manner. In this course with data scientist and professor Jennifer Shin, learn how to evaluate and access the public health data by exploring the sources driving the COVID-19 dashboards, including 1Point3Acres, BNO News, WorldoMeter, and the COVID Tracking Project. Learn how to identify reputable sources and appraise the quality of the information collected.

Data visualization playbook: The importance of excluding unnecessary details
Creating a visualization whose design serves its intended function—rather than the other way around—can be intoxicating, but don’t get so high on data that you lose sight of your audience. Find out how including too much information can neutralize your visualization—and your message with it.

Data visualization playbook: Using function to drive design
As we’ve learned, choosing an appropriate level of detail lays the foundation for an effective visualization. But if you simply take your first design idea and run with it, you might be doing your data a disservice. Find out why redundant visualizations can turn detail into too much of a good thing...

Data visualization playbook: Determining the right level of detail
The most efficient way for data scientists to convey vital information is through visualizations—but if they aren’t easily understood, critical insights may become lost. Here’s a quick and handy guide to creating data visualizations that are appropriately detailed to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Data visualization Playbook: Letting the data dictate the visualization
Data visualization techniques can give data scientists a vital tool for representing the data that analysts and line-of-business users need to make strategic decisions. Discover how a few simple considerations of a specific data set in a real-world use case enables data scientists to implement cost...
